Life in Indian Air Force

Indian Air Force is a very important part of Defence Forces. We have fought many wars and Air Force had played a crucial role in winning those wars. Indian Air Force had done many surgical Strikes against enemy counties and is plays a very crucial role during natural calamity.

If you want to join Indian Air Force as an Officer, what you need to have those qualities that is required by SSB. Once you have joined the Forces, you can enjoy the life in Indian Air Force. It is so adventurous to be in Air Force.

Branches in Indian Air Force

There are 3 branches in Indian Air Forces  :

a) Flying Branches : Flying branch includes officers who all are going to fly fighter jets, helicopter like Chinook, Apache etc. and other Air Force craft.

b) Ground Duty (Technical Branch) : Technical Branch is divided into further two parts :

1) Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanics) : They basically focus on  maintenance of the jets, engines and machinery in the aircraft.

2) Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics): They manages the work related to radar systems and signal.

c) Ground Duty (Non-Technical): There are many responsibilities of Non-Technical branch in Indian Air Force related to Administration and Logistics, Accounts, and Education.

 

These are the 5 Ways to Join Indian Air Forces as an Officer :

1. NDA

NDA is an UPSC conducted examination. UPSC conducts this exam twice a year. NDA examination happens in two phases. It’s a biggest opportunity for students to join forces directly after class 12th. First written exam and then SSB (Service Selection Board).

Through NDA you can join all the three forces of Indian Defence Forces. But only male candidates can apply for this exam. In this we will be talking only about Indian Air Force.

Age : 16.5 – 19 yrs (only male)

Education Qualifications :

Candidates appearing or passed in class 12 th from recognised board can apply. You need minimum 60% as aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Maths in class 12th. There is no minimum required.

 

2. CDS

CDS stands for Combined Defence Services is an Examination Conducted by UPSC. Through CDS entry you can apply for all the three forces but in this blog we are discussing about Indian Air Force only. CDS examination is conducted all over the India.

Only Male Candidates can apply for Indian Air Force through this entry.

Eligibility Criteria of Age and Martial Status :

Age : 19-23 yrs

Martial Status : Candidates less than 25 years of age should be Unmarried

Education Qualifications :

A candidate must have a Bachelor Degree (minimum three years degree) in any discipline with a recognized university. And it is mandatory to have Physics and Mathematics in 10+2.

 

3. AFCAT

AFCAT stands for Air Force Common Admission Test. This examination is conducted by Indian Air Force twice a year. Through this entry you can apply for various branches of Air Force.

One of the biggest Advantage of this entry is that both men and women apply for this entry.

Men can Apply for Permanent commission as well as Short Service Commission whereas Women can only apply for SSC.

1) Eligibility Criteria Age and Martial Status : 

 Flying Branch :

Age : 20-24 yrs

Candidates holding DGCA ( India) Pilot License is relaxable upto 26 yrs.

Unmarried below 25 years.

Ground Duty ( Both Technical and Non Technical) :Age : 20-26 yrs

Martial Status : Unmarried below 25 years.

2) Education Qualification : 

Flying Branch : 

A candidate must have scored minimum 60% marks in each Physics and Mathematics at 10+2.

A graduation degree with a minimum 3 year degree course in any discipline from a recognized university with minimum 60% marks or equivalent . OR

Tech degree from a recognized university with min 60% marks or equivalent. OR

Cleared Section A and B exam of AMIE ( Associate Membership of Institute of Engineering or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies from a recognized university with a min 60% marks or equivalent.

Ground Duty ( Technical Branch) :

It consists of two roles :

1) Aeronautics Engineer (Electronics) :

A candidate must have scored minimum 60% marks in each Physics and Mathematics at 10+2.

A graduation degree with a minimum 4 year degree course in engineering /Technology from a recognized university with minimum 60% marks or equivalent .

Cleared Section A and B exam of AMIE ( Associate Membership of Institute of Engineering or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies from a recognized university with a min 60% marks or equivalent.

Graduate membership exam of the institute of Electronics and Telecommunication engineering by actual studies with a min. 60% marks or equivalent in the following Disciplines :

Information Technology Instrument & Control Engineering Instrumentation & Control Engineering.
Electronics Communication and Instrumentation Engineering Electronics and Computer Engineering Electronics and/or Telecommunication Engineering (Microwave)
Electronics and/or Telecommunication Engineering Electronics and Computer Science Electronics and Communication Engineering
Electronics Electronics Science and Engineering Electronics Engineering/ Technology.
Electrical Engineering. Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Computer Science and Engineering/Technology. Computer Engineering & Application. Computer Engineering/Technology.
Communication Engineering

2) Aeronautics Engineer (Mechanical) : 

A candidate must have scored minimum 60% marks in each Physics and Mathematics at 10+2.

A graduation degree with a minimum 4 year degree course in engineering /Technology from a recognized university with minimum 60% marks or equivalent . OR

Cleared Section A and B exam of AMIE ( Associate Membership of Institution of Engineering or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies from a recognized university with a min 60% marks or equivalent in the following disciplines :

Industrial Engineering Mechatronics. Mechanical Engineering (Repair and Maintenance)
Mechanical Engineering (Production). Mechanical Engineering and Automation Mechanical Engineering
Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Aeronautical Engineering Aerospace Engineering.

Ground Duty ( Non- Technical) : 

Ground duty Non-Technical have many have many job roles for a officer to perform :

Administration and Logistics : Graduate Degree with min. 60% or equivalent from a recognized university.

Accounts : B. Com Degree ( Min. 3 years degree course ) from a recognized university with a min. of 60% marks or equivalent.

Education : MBA/ MCA  or MA/ MSC in English, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Statistics, International relation, International Studies, Defence Studies, Psychology, Computer Science, IT, Management, Mass communication, Journalism, Public Relation, with min. 50% marks in all the paper together.

Meteorology : Post Graduation degree in Science stream, Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Computer Application, Environmental Science, Applied Physics, Oceanography, Meteorology, Agriculture, Ecology, Environment, Geophysics, Environmental Biology with min. 56% marks in total of all the paper together.

 

4. NCC Special Entry (Flying Branch)

NCC special Entry is for those candidates who all are in NCC at university level. It’s a great opportunity for you to directly appear in SSB.  It is also called a Direct Entry, you not need to write CDS or AFCAT examination.

Eligibility Criteria : 

A candidate must to have NCC ‘C’ Certificate ( Air Wing Senior Division)

Age : 20-24 yrs

Education Qualification : 

Physics and Maths at 10+2 level and Graduation in any 3 year degree course from a recognized university with min. 60% marks or equivalent.

5. University Entry Scheme

University Entry is a great opportunity for those who are in their Pre-final year of BE / B. Tech and passed with min. 60% marks. Provide maths and Physics studied at Graduation level with min. 55% marks.

Eligibility Criteria :

Age : 18-28 yrs

Martial Status : Unmarried before the age of 25 years.
